Analytical Essay

Over the course of the semester, I will offer three essay prompts (one in each sphere), and it is up to you to decide which one essay prompt to complete as a cornerstone to the type, kind, question, or challenge of public discourse you are most interested in. Most prompts will function similarly, asking you to analyze a particular and situated genre through the lens of one or more critical texts. In true “essay” form, this assignment asks you “to try towards” or “to claim,” opening with a critical discovery you have made based on your analysis, and unfolding that discovery in a series of smaller claims that synthesize, rather than merely summarize, the texts that you write about. Your discovery should be interesting and vital, i.e., something that advances your own and others’ thinking about what we’re doing this semester.
