About the Assignment
Based on the themes we investigate as a class related to writing and rhetoric in the public sphere, the whole class will – in smaller working groups – compose, revise, edit, and submit a well-researched article to Wikipedia that contributes to a “topic” already identified, or expands on an article “stub.” In many ways, this is a culminating assignment, and it gives you the opportunity to enact principles offered by Lazere, Wolf, and Ridolfo and DeVoss (among others) about achieving clarity without oversimplification, and about understanding remediation as more than a simple changing out of tools. Writing on the Wiki requires some in-depth study of fallibility and compliance, not to mention a sense of what the Wiki community values and needs. You also have to fulfill a series of steps before submission. Group assignments will be worked out early in the semester. All members in each group will need to establish a free account on Wikipedia.
